Learn piano
the easy way

Watch notes fall to your keyboard and play along when they land. Slow a song down, loop a tricky section, or practice each hand separately.

Transcribe any audio into the perfect piano roll

Give it an MP3, a MIDI file, or even a YouTube link.

Paste a link to any piano video and lumikey downloads it and transcribes it on your computer. Drop in an audio file and it does the same. Over 40 classics are already loaded to get you started.

Use it with your MIDI keyboard, or just a microphone.

Connect a keyboard over USB or Bluetooth and lumikey knows exactly which key you pressed. Or just use your microphone and it listens to your piano instead, acoustic or digital. Either way, lumikey always knows when you've played the chord.

It works out which hand plays what, and which finger.

Every note is color-coordinated by hand, with a small badge suggesting each finger. Tap any badge to pick a more comfortable finger and lumikey remembers your choice.

Practice one hand at a time

Turn on wait for the left hand and the right plays itself, while the song waits at every left-hand chord until you play it. Swap hands, or wait for both. Slow the whole thing down to a quarter speed and loop the trickiest sections.

Tweak the transcript

Drag notes, stretch notes, move them to the other hand, line up a chord, delete the noise. When it's right, export it as a MIDI file.

Questions

Can I learn a piano song from a YouTube video?

Yes. Paste the link to a piano video into lumikey and it downloads the audio and transcribes it into falling notes on your computer. It works best on solo piano recordings. You can also drop in an MP3, WAV or other audio file, or a MIDI file.

How is lumikey different from Synthesia?

Synthesia plays MIDI files you already have. lumikey plays MIDI files too, but it can also make the piece for you from any piano recording or YouTube link, works out which hand plays each note, suggests fingering, and lets you fix the transcription and export it as MIDI. It can also listen to an acoustic piano through your microphone instead of a MIDI keyboard.

How is lumikey different from Flowkey or Simply Piano?

Flowkey and Simply Piano are built around their own song libraries and lessons, mostly sold by subscription. lumikey lets you learn the exact recording you want to play, from YouTube or your own files, for a one-time payment. It is a practice tool rather than a course, so it suits people who already know which songs they want to learn.

Do I need a MIDI keyboard?

No. A keyboard connected over USB or Bluetooth MIDI gives the most precise note detection, but lumikey can also listen to your acoustic or digital piano through your computer's microphone.

Can I practice one hand at a time and slow songs down?

Yes. Wait mode stops the song at each chord for the hand you choose until you play it, while the other hand plays itself. You can slow any song down to a quarter speed, with the original recording kept at its pitch, and loop a short section.

Do I need to read sheet music?

No. lumikey shows notes falling onto a keyboard, colored by hand with a suggested finger on each note, so you can follow along without reading notation.

How much does lumikey cost? Is there a subscription?

There is no subscription. lumikey is free to try with 8 imports of your own songs, plus over 40 classical pieces already included. A lifetime licence is a one-time payment of $49 and includes every future update.

Can I turn a piano recording into a MIDI file?

Yes. lumikey transcribes piano audio into notes, and once you have tidied the result in its editor you can export it as a standard MIDI file for a DAW, notation software or another piano app.

Does lumikey work offline? Are my recordings uploaded?

Transcription, hand detection and playback all run on your computer, and nothing you import or play is uploaded. The internet is only needed to fetch a YouTube link and to check for updates.

What computers does lumikey run on?

Macs with Apple silicon running macOS 15 or later, and 64-bit Windows 10 or 11 PCs. Companion apps for iPhone, iPad and Android, which sync your songs from the desktop over Wi-Fi, are coming soon.

Can AI assistants control lumikey?

Yes. lumikey can run a local API and MCP server on your computer, so assistants such as Claude can search your library, read and edit a song's notes, and control playback. It listens only on your own computer unless you switch on local network access.
